Beyond The Griddle - French Toast Dippers

White bread used to be the favorite for French toast, but today there are numerous dense breads available. Here's a list of less conventional dippers:

  • Challah – a honey and butter enriched Jewish yeast bread shaped into a braid.
  • Panettone – fruity citron breakfast bread made in Italy that stands several inches high.
  • Raisin Bread – great when dipped into a batter of eggs, rum raisin ice cream and dark rum.
  • Cinnamon Swirl Bread – available in a sliced loaf package; top with glazed powdered sugar and you have cinnamon roll French toast.
  • Pound Cake – choose from plain, vanilla, blueberry, or lemon and design your own French toast.
  • English Muffins – use for a fruity breakfast French toast, or an interesting savory one.
  • Italian or French Bread – great for stuffed French toast; try a filling of cream cheese and fruit. Cut bread into 2 1/4 x 4 1/2-inch slices that are 1-inch thick. (Note: skinny baguette breads will not work).
  • Croissants – split down the middle and stuff with either a savory or sweet filling. The buttery, flaky crust will add a slight crunch.
  • Sourdough Bread – adds wonderful flavor to either sweet or savory French toasts.
  • Texas Toast – typically used for French toast because of its thick, dense nature.
